Academic Frame
The academic frame in my paper is stress and anxiety among international students studying at American universities. I found that Caitlin Zaloom's book, Indebted, was very useful to relate to my topic since she focuses on the relationship between an individual's autonomy and some of the "stressors" like student debt. She came with her own academic frames called "nested silence" and "enmeshed autonomy" where she mentions that American parents try to hide financial issues from their kids when it comes to financing their children’s educations because they do not want their children to limit their dreams but want them to live a better life than their parents. She also defines the term "enmeshed autonomy" by emphasizing the situation that kids whose parents take on debt for their college educations are more tied to the parents and take longer to achieve full autonomy. Since I believe that adjusting to living and learning in a new environment lead international students to suffer from a serious mental health problem, her analogy would be great to discuss in my research and use it as a supportive claim to go further with a stress and anxiety factors that international households are facing.
